What to expect
Firstly, we treat you with the utmost discretion, care and confidentiality at all times. We use osteopathic techniques that are safe, simple & effective & work directly on muscles, joints, nerves, connective tissue, the spine and the abdominal viscera (organs). Our treatments are efficient, which means fewer are needed. Using gentle 'hands on' techniques aid rapid pain reduction and promote the normal functioning of your body. Cranial Osteopathy, a gentler form of osteopathy is also offered and it's often the favoured choice for expectant mothers during pregnancy, beyond labour and with babies and children. Parents report their children are helped to relax and be more settled following treatment.
When you visit
During your first consultation we will take a detailed case history of your presenting symptoms and your past medical history together with relevant lifestyle factors such as occupation, sport/exercise and diet. This will help us to build up a more complete picture of you and of the possible causes and underlying factors of your complaint.
During the Osteopathic examination we will assess your posture and will ask you to perform some simple movements. We will also use palpation (sense of touch), to identify areas of weakness, strain, tenderness and restriction in the joints, muscles and soft tissues. Sometimes it may also be necessary to perform examinations similar to those used by your G.P. e.g. taking your blood pressure, reflexes etc.
To help facilitate our examination we will generally ask you to undress down to your underwear. However, if you'd prefer please feel free to bring a pair of shorts to wear and you are welcome to bring a chaperone (friend or family member).
Following the examination we will discuss with you our findings and diagnosis and develop, in consultation with you, a treatment plan.
On occasions it may be necessary to refer you to your G.P to request further tests/investigations e.g. blood tests or x-rays/scans in order to further investigate the nature of your symptoms.
We also ask that you please switch off your mobile phone during the consultations to avoid distractions.
