Babies and Children

Picture
Parents commonly bring their babies to us for Cranial Osteopathy in the first few weeks following birth, but they can be treated at any time in their development.  The baby’s mother/ father will be invited to be part of the session and as the baby responds to treatment, they can often be held or fed during the treatment. Older babies can play with their parents or siblings.  Many parents find this a positive shared experience for their family.

At Brent & Camden Osteopaths we offer post-natal checks for both Mother and Baby
Initial consultations from:  £140 & follow ups from: £70

Osteopathy is a holistic treatment which starts by understanding the effects of pregnancy and birth, as well as the implications this has on growth and development of the baby & child.   As Osteopaths we are specifically trained to consider these issues as well the emotional and physical health of both mother and child throughout this process.

The Osteopath will take into consideration:
  • the developmental progress and all aspects of health in their assessment  of a baby or child
  • any  symptoms of discomfort  e.g. being irritable or crying for long periods, preferences to turn head or feed on one side,  signs of digestive discomfort , sleeping issues.
  • baby’s head shape and symmetry, most babies lose their extreme ‘moulded’ shape following birth through normal activities e.g. yawning, feeding etc. but, some babies struggle with the ‘unmoulding’  process which may leave the young baby with  discomfort and various problems
  • as children grow older any accidents or falls they may have and any ‘growing’ aches or pains

Please contact us if you want to discuss whether  Osteopathy  is likely  to be able to  help you  or your child .

What to expect

Following a detailed assessment and discussion with parents regarding pregnancy, labour and any current concerns The Osteopath uses specific light pressure or gentle movements applied to the necessary parts of the body to assist the body’s natural release of stresses and tensions. Children often rest or sleep during treatment, some like to feed, and older children can enjoy a story read by their parent.

Post treatment

Reactions to treatment will vary from child to child, some have a really good night’s sleep and others have a spurt of energy. Reactions typically clear in 24- 48 hours without concern.

As with all treatments to new-borns or adults we are on hand to discuss your suitability for treatment, or any changes that you notice which may need some clarification or advice. Our osteopaths are always at the end of the phone to help in any way we can.

"Gillian has treated our three year old son who has since birth been excessively clingy, a poor sleeper, whiney, irritable and generally all round quite hard work.  Gillian's suggestion was that this might be treatable as it could be the result of undue pressure to the skull during delivery........The cranial osteopathy was very non-interventionist and my husband and I had few expectations of any change.  However tantrums virtually ceased, he settled down quickly to sleep at night, he slept through the night and is now able to sleep for 12 hours consistently without waking. He is happier, more carefree, more of himself really. My husband and I are dumbfounded and delighted.

Subsequently she has managed to move vertebra, which have been fixed rigid for over twenty years, she has released on some level physically and emotionally some of the strains and injuries from the car accident.  For me she is the first person who has ever had insight to understand what is actually wrong with me physically, to treat the problem as opposed to the symptom and to treat my physiology in its totality amongst holistically as opposed to simply the presenting symptoms.  I had always put the problem down to computers and not sitting properly but she found the cause and I now have a back that I am learning to use properly again.  The treatment has transformed my life."
